How to Prevent Another UTI

How to Prevent Another UTI

If you’ve had a urinary tract infection (UTI) before, you may be able to tell that another one’s coming. That burning sensation when you urinate alerts you to the fact that unwelcome bacteria has gotten where it shouldn’t.

One UTI is annoying enough. If these types of infections keep affecting you, it’s time to figure out how to make it stop.

We can help. At SmartClinic Urgent Care in West Covina and Santa Clarita, California, our team offers targeted UTI care. We go beyond merely prescribing antibiotics. We work with you to adopt lifestyle changes to prevent these kinds of infections from coming back. And when those adjustments aren’t enough, we can help you layer in targeted treatment to protect your urinary system from this issue.

Lifestyle tools to prevent UTIs

You can do a number of things to lower your risk of experiencing another UTI:

Wipe the right way

Always wipe from front to back. This lowers your risk of inadvertently moving fecal matter toward your urethra, where its bacteria can contribute to an infection.

Drink up

When you’re well-hydrated, you urinate more frequently. That gives your body more opportunities to flush bad bacteria out of your urethra.

Also, when your bladder fills and you feel like you need to go, find a bathroom and go. Holding in your urine can contribute to UTIs.

Don’t douche

A woman’s vagina has healthy bacteria that helps to fight the problem bacteria that causes UTIs. When you douche or otherwise excessively clean your vagina, you can remove that line of defense.

Urinate after sex

Unsurprisingly, intercourse introduces bacteria to your genitals. So your body has the chance to flush out unwelcome invaders, make it a point to go as soon as you can after having sex.

Cue the cranberry

Some doctors recommend cranberry juice or supplements to help with UTIs, and some people experience results with these kinds of preventive measures.

The FDA has said there’s limited evidence to support cranberry’s effectiveness. But with so much anecdotal evidence, if you like cranberries, it can’t hurt to consume them. If you’re drinking your cranberry, make sure you’re choosing a quality juice that uses the berries and not a juice cocktail with lots of added sugar.

Getting care for recurrent UTIs

If you implement these tips and UTIs keep coming back, come in to see our team at SmartClinic Urgent Care. Recurrent UTIs could mean that your body needs extra support.

During menopause, for example, declining estrogen levels can increase your likelihood of developing these infections. Applying a topical estrogen helps defend against them.

That’s just one targeted treatment for chronic UTIs. We can help you find what’s right for you.
