What is Ketamine IV infusion?

Ketamine is an anesthetic that has been used in emergency departments and operating rooms for many decades.  It has a well-proven safety profile.  Now this medication is a promising treatment for some cases of major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and chronic pain.

Ketamine works by binding to various receptors in the brain to promote regrowth and connections between brain cells that help regulate one’s mood. Ketamine IV infusion targets NMDA receptors in the brain.  It binds to these receptors, increasing the amount of the neurotransmitter glutamate in the space between neurons.  Glutamate activates connections in another receptor called the AMPA receptor, releasing additional molecules that help neurons communicate along new pathways.  This process of synaptogenesis improves mood, cognition, and thought patterns.  Ketamine also influences depression in other ways by reducing signals that trigger inflammation, which is linked to mood disorders.
